Onychomycosis

Onychomycosis

Dermatology · Body

What it is

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection that affects the nails, most frequently the toenails, leading to changes such as thickening, discolouration, brittleness and nail deformation. The infection occurs when fungi settle in the nail or nail bed, favoured by factors such as moisture, repeated trauma, use of closed footwear, immune system changes or associated diseases.

Onychomycosis

What it's for

Treatment aims to eliminate the infectious agent and restore the health and normal appearance of the nail, and may involve different therapeutic approaches, according to the extent of the infection, the number of affected nails and individual characteristics.

How it's done

Treatment may involve antifungal laser therapy, which acts directly on the fungus without damaging the surrounding tissues, combined or not with topical or systemic therapies, depending on the severity and extent of the onychomycosis.
